Alves were born Rodrigo Alves on 30 July 1983 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Alves's Brazilian mother and a British father. Roserval Alves (her father) is from Portugal, and came to Brazil in 1944. The family was initially involved in farming, but later they moved into retailing and shopping centres. At the age of five, she was at the time her grandfather gifted her Barbie dolls. Alves was born male, however, she believed that she should have been a female from her age of "three, four, five and six". The girl also played with dolls, cross-dressed as well as enjoyed playing with them. Alves is of the opinion that individuals shouldn't be judged with their gender. Alves was bullied and shy in her childhood. [9] As a teen, Alves had a hormone disorder, with high levels of estrogen which led to the breasts to expand; Alves' other traits were taken advantage of by bullies. Alves is the daughter of a family who owns a number of Brazilian grocery stores, which have made them rich. However, Alves is yet to gain any profit from the stores in 2018. [10] Alves moved to London at the age of 18 in order to study public relations at the London College of Communication. [3][4] She also has money as an inheritance from her maternal grandmother.
